Koa Wood Hawaii
Koa Wood Hawaii
Chris Allen and Dan Kurtz are Koa Wood Hawaii, here at Koa Wood Hawaii we make koa bowls and fine woodturnings from over 40 different Hawaiian woods and many others from around the world. We also sell Hawaiian woods like koa, mango, milo, mac-nut and lychee and many more.
Chris has been turning for 30 years and Dan has been turning for more than 20 years and in this time they both have honed their skills so they can make just about anything on the lathe, they can turn bowls up to 4 feet 8 inches down to 1/4 inch in diameter. Their imagination and attention to detail is reflected in there work which has been sold in fine galleries in Hawaii, North America and Europe, they also have there work in many private collections around the world. Just to name a few collectors who have our work are Keali'i Reichel, A. Lono Lyman and Alexander Brody.
We use mostly fallen trees and trees from tree removal services and we also replant trees like Koa, Kou and Sandalwood because Hawaii is an Island and when the wood is gone it is gone so we must replant, also Hawaii has more rare and endangered trees than anywhere else in the United States.
We make many different shapes and sizes of woodturnings everything from miniature dollhouse style bowls 1/2 inch in diameter to very large bowls up to 4 feet in diameter, we specialize in Hawaiian style calabash bowls and replica's of old Hawaiian bowls and coconut turnings.
We also sell different Hawaiian woods when they are available and you can find them on the Koa for sale pages.

We will work with you to help you find a one of a kind gift for each and every person on your list.
This picture shows some of the steps in making Hawaiian Calabash style bowls, the PICTURE IN THE LOWER LEFT shows slabs of wood that we just milled from logs. Then we draw circles and cut them out on the band saw, then we glue a waste block onto the round and the PICTURE ON THE LOWER RIGHT shows the rounds all glued up and the main picture shows the bowls rough cut and ready to be put on the shelf for 1 year to dry. Then after drying for a year the bowls will be finish cut and sanded and finished.
We also make very big bowls and platters on our homemade lathe, we can turn bowls up to 4 feet 8 inches in diameter, the to bowls in the picture are over 24 inches in diameter.

We like to make natural edge bowls and this one is made from Hawaiian Milo wood and has an extreme natural edge, the natural edge bowls are harder to make than regular bowls and much harder to sand the inside as you can imagine.
This is a natural edge curly Cinnamon bowl, the bark smells great when I turned this bowl, the cinnamon you use on your toast comes from the bark of the cinnamon tree.
This is another natural edge Milo wood bowl, I like Milo because it is a very stable wood and works very well, the color of the Milo is a Pinkish red color when it is fresh and then it will turn brown with age, if you have a Milo log that has been drying for a few years then you will sometimes get the color pattern of dark brown and pinkish red colors, not all Milo is like this and it is hard to find Milo with this color pattern.

And yes we make a lot of Koa bowls too, this is a premium full curl, Koa bowl, This kind of premium curly grain is hard to find and costly too.
This is another very nice and very curly Koa bowl with a cover, this bowl is made in the traditional Hawaiian Calabash shape.
Here is a nice curly Koa bowl in the traditional Hawaiian Calabash shape but without a cover, curly Koa is a very nice wood and has a 3D quality that is truly amazing.

We also have plenty of Hawaiian woods for sale, this is a bunch of Hawaiian Koa logs.
More Hawaiian Koa logs
Koa logs, we have a bandsaw mill and we can mill logs up to 28 inches in diameter, these logs are ready to be milled.

This is a load of Koa we just milled, good thing we got a big truck, we can haul up to 6 tons of wood.
This is a small piece of Koa we are milling.
This is Chris turning a big bowl on his homemade bowl lathe, it can turn bowls up to 4 teet 8 inches in diameter.
