The Hawaiian kou (Cordia subcordata) is a native Hawaiian tree known for its beautiful orange flowers, which were used for leis, and its versatile, non-resinous wood, ideal for making calabashes, dishes, and fishing tools. Once common, many trees were destroyed by moths in the 1800s, making kou wood a rare and prized resource.

Introduction vs. Native Status:
While once thought to be a Polynesian-introduced “canoe plant,” recent discoveries of kou on the island of Kauai pre-dating human arrival confirm its indigenous status in the Hawaiian Islands.
  • Decline and Scarcity:
The population of kou trees in Hawaii declined significantly after being almost entirely wiped out by a moth infestation in the 19th century.

  • Current Status:
Kou is now a rare hardwood, with its wood still used occasionally for crafting but in very short supply
