The Hawaiian Naio tree (Myoporum sandwicense) is a highly versatile and ecologically important native plant found across the main Hawaiian islands. Also known as “false sandalwood,” it is used for its fragrant, dense wood but is distinct from the true Hawaiian sandalwood.
Cultural uses: Native Hawaiians historically used naio for its sturdy wood, which was made into items such as: Manu: Canoe bow and stern end pieces.  Pale: Canoe gunwales.  Pou: House posts.  Lamalama: Torches for night fishing.
